Neither of them duplicates the app. The app keeps the ledger: every amount, every payday, every interest payment, with the arithmetic done for you. These are the two things paper is better at: an agreement everybody can see, and a wall chart a child can fill in themselves.

Before you fill in a rate

The interest rate on the agreement is the one field worth doing arithmetic on first. It applies to the whole savings jar, and the jar grows, so the weekly payment grows with it. Put your numbers into the kids savings calculator and look at the last result. That is what the final week costs you, and it is the figure to be comfortable with before you promise anything.

If you are setting an allowance up for the first time, start here instead. The age guides cover what changes as they grow: 6 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 to 14, 15 to 17.
